Your music has been described as soulful and emotionally rich. What initially drew you to the R&B/Soul genre, and how do you infuse your personal experiences into your music?

Ever since I remember it’s been my favourite genre. When I was little, I remember my older cousins listening to R&B/Soul and I fell in love with it. The soul and emotion that is drenched in R&B is my favourite thing about it. No other genre makes me feel the same way.

For me, it’s always been easier to explain how I’m feeling through a song/music than speaking about it or telling someone. So, music has always been an outlet for me and a way to express my (many) feelings, so personal experiences usually end up flowing naturally into my music.

With your base in both Melbourne and Los Angeles, how do you find that different environments impact your creative process and musical output?

Melbourne and LA are two totally different cities and two cities that I love and am grateful to be impacted by. Growing up in Melbourne, we are so isolated from the rest of the world and our industry is so much smaller than the industry overseas. Pursuing music in such an isolated environment definitely allowed me to cultivate so many skills and hone my craft. Because I was doing so much on my own, I learned a lot of skills: songwriting, engineering, vocal producing, creative direction, marketing, and so much more. Basically, growing up and pursuing music in Melbourne was a whole lot of self-artist development. Working alone a lot and with my producer in Melbourne, really allowed me to solidify my unique sound.

Then moving to LA, I was able to experience a much bigger industry, a city that’s full of creatives. Being surrounded by so many extremely talented people and so much music has been amazing and I’ve definitely learned a lot. Being out there is really inspiring. It has an energy that I can’t really explain but you can feel when you’re there. In saying that, it’s not easy so it’s definitely made me a lot stronger. Its a lot more fast-paced than Melbourne, you can be in sessions everyday if you want to. There’s a lot of opportunity.

I’d say Melbourne helped me cultivate/soldify my sound, and really go all in on artist development and LA has allowed me to flourish, connect with creatives in person and put my years of work into action.

As a woman in the music industry, how do you balance expressing your authentic self with commercial success, especially when faced with pressures to conform to certain standards or trends?

For me, I just always want to be myself. I think going back to being isolated in Aus and songwriting for myself, recording myself, creative directing my shoots, it naturally all translates in the art that I put out. I just always want my art to be true to who I am. I feel really grateful that the music that I have released so far has been well-received despite not conforming to trends/standards. The music industry has made strides towards gender equality, but there is still work to be done.

What steps do you think need to be taken to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for women in music, both in terms of representation and opportunities?

Being a woman in a male dominated industry isn’t easy. The reality is, in most of my sessions and meetings, I’m the only woman. While the industry has made strides towards gender equality, which is refreshing to see, there’s still some work to do for sure. Women really are AMAZING and we deserve the representation and opportunities. There are so many great women A&R’s, managers, executives, radio hosts, artists, songwriters and producers, I would love to see that highlighted/showcased more. Women deserve to be in the highest positions in the industry too, I want to see more women running labels and companies. I think in general there needs to be more respect for women. Creating a safe space for us in studios is also extremely important.

Collaborations can often bring new dimensions to an artist's sound. Are there any artists or producers you would love to collaborate with?

I’ve always said my dream collabs are Frank Ocean, Drake & Stevie Wonder. I would also really love to collab with Brent Faiyaz or SZA.

As you continue to release new music, what can listeners expect to hear in your upcoming work?

My EP is coming out this year... with the singles coming out really soon!! I won’t say too much but listeners can definitely expect to get in their feelingssss and to get lost in the music and production. I really poured my whole heart into it and it’s my favourite music I’ve ever made. I’m so excited to finally share this body of work!
