IT Automation Engineer by day, and Naarm-based DJ by night, Tinika is renowned for her distinctive taste and adventurous track selection. Through sonic exploration, she strives to surprise with each carefully curated mix but also brings with her, a sense of nostalgia to the dance floor.
Tinika grew up heavily influenced by the sounds she selects today, with her output being a feel-good fusion ranging from House and Baile Funk to experimental Hip Hop, RnB and everything in between.
Drawing on her queer black identity, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a genre untouched by Tinika who seems to always give the crowd what they didn’t know they needed.
"For The Honeys Volume 27 is inspired by my teenage years and the heavy influence that RnB and Hip Hop had on me, alongside my love for the way such styles have evolved for the club and more modern listening. But all in all, it's an ode to black music, and black creators in music.
I've featured sounds of the diaspora such as Baile Funk, Amapiano, Afrobeats and Future RnB which inspire me the most at the moment. In true Tinika style, this mix is quintessentially me, and draws a sense of nostalgia whilst remaining current in the styles that are emerging today."
Catch Tinika at Tribqu's live sessions event on 18 December at Kindred Band Room in Footscray, or join her in bringing in the New Year at Beyond The Valley and Let Them Eat Cake.
