We've been pretty blessed with the all the ladies who've supported us over the past 12 months for our seasonal For The Honey mixes, and we're also very blessed that locally, our pool of talented ladies is no short of running dry, especially with the likes of Sydney based DJ Ebony Boadu finessing up the scene.
Since picking up DJing only a year and a half ago, not only has Ebony graced the stage of some seriously mentionable parties at Hudson Ballroom and The Cliff Dive, she also throws sell-out monthly party - GIRLS; which can be described as a platform for like minded ladies to play in, co-created by the Honey herself.
This season, Ebony helps us to celebrate our very 1st birthday with For The Honeys Volume 5 (Vol. 5!!!) filled with jams to get you that little bit extra this weekend, and we also got the chance to catch her for a quick Q&A before she jets off to NYC, read up after the drop.
Describe your style of sound in 3 words?
Energetic, global, fun.
Where was your first ever gig?
Myself along with two friends created a party called GIRLS and that’s where we all made our debut sets. We knew when we were just starting off DJing it was going to be really hard to get gigs, and to be honest, to be taken seriously by other people. We figured if no one else would put us on we may as well do it ourselves, so we just threw a party. We didn't even expect that many people to come but it ended up going kind of viral and became a monthly party that we used to promote other females as well.
So what was the first album you ever purchased?
Kanye's 808’s and Heartbreak when I was like 12, I used to play Love Lockdown and Welcome to Heartbreak non-stop and try to mimic the autotune.
Tell us some of the female artists you’re feeling at the moment?
SZA, AlunaGeorge, Kali Uchis, Princess Nokia , Cardi B, ABRA.
What’s your favourite hype up track?
Portland by Drake featuring Quavo or Redbone by Childish Gambino.
Favourite slow jam?
Favourite venue to play?
Portugal Madeira Club in Marrickville. It’s like a little community sports club at the front but they let people hire the back of the venue and the carpark, so it turns into this semi-outside warehouse/carpark location. It’s really sick.
Favourite venue to party at?
I’m not sure I really have a favourite, I get to party behind the decks and I play all over the place. The more inclusive the venue, the better though. Places that are more open generally attract a more enthusiastic crowd and DJ’s get to be more creative with their sets.
Sydney has a bunch of young creatives throwing awesome parties all over the place and they're always really fun. Shantan Wantan Itchiban throws a party called Dutty Dancing at Hudson Ballroom and it’s always wild. I also played a really fun set at ARTBAR which is at the top of the Museum Of Contemporary Art. It overlooks Sydney Harbour and was stunning!
What track sums you up the best at the this very moment?
Happy by Pharrell LOL so corny but I just graduated from Uni, I get to DJ for a living and I just booked a spontaneous trip to visit my best friend in New York next week!
And who should we be listening to right now?
SZA’s album CTRL if you’re not already! I’ve been listening to it on repeat since it came out, I LOVE HER!
